On Saturday, 5 May 2017, the Swiss Ornithological Institute Sempach was awarded the Sustainability Prize of the «European Museum of the Year Award» (EMYA) 2017 in Zagreb, Croatia, for their new Visitor Centre. We were invited to the award ceremony and were delighted about the recognition.
The jury chose the Ornithological Institute for the Sustainability Award because of its innovative approach of arousing the public’s awareness of endangered bird species on the one hand; on the other hand, it recognised the ecological pioneering in regard to the building itself: the building and the exhibition fulfil the Swiss Minergie P-Eco standards for minimum energy consumption, and the building was constructed with ecological building materials. With the Sustainability Award, the jury clearly signalises their support of unusual concepts in the museum landscape.
The Museum of Ethnography in Geneva, Switzerland, received the «European Museum of the Year Award» 2017. Altogether, 46 museums from 24 European countries were nominated.
