1'000 Years of History

For the museum of the Muri monastery, we designed an exhibition that brings the almost 1,000 years of the monastery’s history to life. A multi-media theatre tells about crises and heydays – from the founding by the Habsburgs to the Reformation, the banishment from the monastery up to the last Habsburg Emperor. Did you know that the hearts of these monarchs were laid to rest in Muri? One of the museum’s novelties is the mechanical pop-up book that recounts the founding history. In the adjacent «abbots’ cellar», the subsequent history of the monastery is told by seven abbots. After passing through the historic cloister courtyard the visitors reach the exhibition room entitled «Life in the Monastery», where they become acquainted with Benedictine daily life. Finally, the museum tour takes the visitors into the impressive, baroque monastery church.
